Christ United Methodist Church started on April 11, 1959, when twelve people met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.A. McCarney on Clearview Avenue with the Pittsburgh Conference Board of Missions to discuss forming a new Methodist Church for the growing Weirton Heights Community. Rev. James Howard Moore was appointed as the first full-time pastor in Mary of 1959, with the first worship service held in a rented Eagle’s Lodge on Pennsylvania Ave. It was here that the congregation officially adopted the name Christ Methodist Church, with 107 charter members. In May of 1961 ground was broken on the land purchased by the Pittsburgh Conference (later West Virginia Conference) for the new church. The corner stone, still visible today, reads September 19, 1961. With the worldwide merger 1962 of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches, the name changed to Christ United Methodist Church, (CUMC) followed in 2004 with the formation of the Weirton Charge (CUMC, FUMC, PVUMC). CUMC is a handicap accessible site. It is a welcoming congregation. Services are held Sundays at 9 a.m., except for the first Sunday of the month when services are held jointly with Pleasant Valley UMC at 10 a.m., and on the second Sunday of the month when the congregation travels to Pleasant Valley UMC for another joint service at 10 a.m. Throughout the year, CUMC hosts Bible Studies and Prayer meetings. One of the best events at CUMC is the Annual Corn Festival, where you can come for fellowship and a yummy menu that features sweet summer corn. Along with this fundraiser, Christ has served as a polling place for Weirton residence. Over the years the church as assisted or hosted Vacation Bible School, and Headstart dinners. CUMC as well as others in the charge, have a strong connection with the surrounding community giving generous donations to schools, nursing homes, and local pantries. A third-party food pantry is in its infancy at the church.
